If Starquest is judged purely on gender compliance, perhaps The B.E.A.T. would win it hands down. Sadly…maybe, fortunately, it’s not. Imagine having Beyonce, Rihanna and Lady Gaga in the same band! What could be the B.E.A.T.’s weakest link has also been displayed as a major asset, especially during stage performances.
Comprising the boisterous lead singer, Beauty Aghedo (aka ‘Swaggalicious’), the other two female vocalists –friendly, accommodating Charity Adubi (aka ‘Spicy’) and serene Enid Eyube (aka ‘Fragrance’) alongside keyboard player, Justice Adigho, drummer Efetobor Ojarigho and bassist/bandleader, Sammie Tochux, The B.E.A.T., was formed out of sheer providence – most members having been ignored by the others during the band formation process. If the group started off on a shaky foundation, they have in time proved that they do possess musical substance; and dramatic stage presence, courtesy the on-stage antics of the girls upfront.
The B.E.A.T. have a point to prove, on many fronts – bandleader, Sammie needs to show his folks back home in Cameroon, that his journey to the quest is not a wasted effort; the girls have to prove to the entire house that the ‘Destiny’s Child’ syndrome does not affect them, while the band as a whole have to show us that there is beauty in gender equality – pun unintended! |
